Hint: & needs to be encoded as &

That’s what I did. I typed ‘&’ but it just says the & in & needs to be typed as &.

So you actually typed & into the Entry Body field in MT? Because that should work.
Alternatively, you can just select Markdown With Smartypants in the Text Formatting dropdown, and you’ll never have to worry about it again ;)
