Simulation

September 19, 2008

In my WWII class we do something called a simulation. Everyone one of us role plays as a Jew in Germany during Hitler's rule. My teacher does this as a teaching aid so that we connect more with what the people back then had to deal with. And so at the beginning of the simulation by chance I was to be a WWI Veteran Communist Jew. I knew that it would be tough surviving from the start but I tried my best.

Today, we learned about Dachau, and as part of the simulation I made a "choice less choice." I wanted to leave Germany illegally, but instead, my teacher sent me to Dachau, and I was killed as soon as I had entered the camp. She explained to me why she did it. She wanted to kill someone people in the class thought would be invincible, and when she said that I agreed with her logic. It seemed like something the SS would have done back then to strike fear into the people. She takes her class very seriously and she really does put herself into the shoes of the people back then.

While I died without given a chance to save myself, I still thankfully have 3 people alive that I brought along: My sister, my best friend, and my girlfriend. I so do not want anymore people of mine to die
