Today's 'topsy-turvy' as we're doing a field trip between 12 and 1:30 this afternoon. So, please note: the lunch break is going to be from 11:00-11:45. We'll meet back in Tolman at a quarter to 12, and walk together to Etcheverry Hall, where we will attend a presentation by members of UC Berkeley's Workstation Support Services XML Project Team. This meeting is sponsored by the Cal WebNet group--a loose affiliation of Cal staff, faculty and grad students involved with website design and maintenance.

At this meeting, the XML Project Team will be discussing XML and how to best make use of this hot but complex technology. They will demonstrate a small application they developed for the CalAgenda service using Java and XML. It will showcase both the possibilities and problems involved in XML-based software development. There will be plenty of time for questions and answers, so please bring your natural curiosity to the table, and prove to these adult Cal specialists that you know something about XML/XHTML too. ;-)

In the afternoon, we will have an invited guest, Chris Ashley, who will talk to us about Weblogging: Another Kind of Website. The link is to an article he wrote for the fall 2001 edition of Berkeley Computing and Communications journal. Chris will lead us in an exercise involving our weblogs.

Weblog/Journal questions

Part 1
Who was your favorite teacher in school? What did they do that made them special? Did you ever tell them that they were your favorite teacher? Have you been a teacher in some fashion? Perhaps you have taught a younger sibling or cousin, or maybe you showed your parents how to use a computer? What does it take to be a good teacher?

Part 2
How close are you to finishing your website design project? What other elements are you thinking of adding to the site, if any? Do you need assistance on any specific area of XHTML coding -- CSS, Javascript, etc.? Finally, is the link to your website correct, on the list on this course weblog?

Homework

None. Finish up your website projects! Presentations will be on Thursday.
