RAWR!!! DAMN YOU ENGLISH ESSAY!!!

alright. I have, for the past year or so, HATED english essays on the grounds that they are all overly descriptive and do not serve much purpose in terms of getting to the point when supporting a thesis. Every year I've hoped for an ANALYSIS essay, so that I can actually do something I'm good at, and use english class to develop a skill I might actually USE. Now my teacher has FINALLY complied and assigned an analysis essay, but has limited the scope of the essay topic to the point where THERE IS NO ANALYSIS in the topic.

"Sample Topics"
The way ads push a materialistic value system of compulsive consumption
Ad slogans, text, or pictures that give a false impression without technically lying
Ads that send the message that things are more important/ better than human relationships

These are only a few of the topics... and NONE OF THEM require analysis! This essay is a descriptive essay under the guise of an analytical essay. There is no analysis in these topics how anything happens. I'm sure you could ATTEMPT to show some sort of cause and effect to how a particular method would have certain side-effects that are unintended, but that isn't even his focus of the topic! His focus is "how ads MANIPULATE people" or how asd have "a HARMFUL effect on teenagers" or how ads "TAKE ADVANTAGE" of vagueness. Every example topic he has provided demonizes ads and disregards the inteded purpose of the advertisement. TO SELL THE DAMN PRODUCT.

He might as well have handed us an essay prompt saying "explain how advertising is evil and it the bane of society" and it would have resulted in the same essay. And now I have to put up with this Bullsh- and write a freaking 2 page essay on ads. not even any particular aspect of ads. Just ads. No real topic... just an "analytical" essay on ads.
