Beaches of Maui

Honokohau Beach Some Swimming Beach On Maui

There are the 42 miles of world famous beaches (only on Maui!), ranging from the little jewel of Red Sand Beach to the black sand beach at Waianapanapa State Park. (Maui Island Highlights site)

Maui has a beach that is just right for you. If you are looking for a long stretch of beach that you can call your own, you can't beat the white sand beaches of South Maui for morning walks or moonlight strolls. All of Hawaii's beaches, including the beaches in front of Maui's luxury hotels, are public property and available to all who wish to enjoy them. In heavily populated areas, look for blue and white shoreline access markers along the roadway that mark public access roads or trails to the ocean.
If you like to people watch while you're walking, Kaanapali's beaches are the best, especially "Dig Me" Beach. No, "dig me" does not refer to its sand! Watch surfers as you walk along Awalua Beach, parasailers at Hanaka'o'o Beach, or windsurfers at Hookipa and Kanaha Beaches. While the morning is best for exercise walking, at sunset, the beaches are spectacular! Instead of walking though, by that time of the day, most people are content to sit on the sand and watch the sun dip below the horizon, ending another perfect day.

Known as "Dig Me" beach among the local teens, Kaanapali Beach is one of Maui's best beaches. It is four miles long, with grainy gold sand as far as the eye can see. The beach parallels the sea channel through most of its length and has a paved beach walk. Summertime swimming is excellent. Various beach activity vendors also line up in front of the hotels located along the beach walk and offer nearly every type of water activity and equipment.

Visit Makena Beach 'Big Beach'
Southwest Maui offers one of the best and largest beaches on the island. The entrance for the north end of the beach is at the second dirt road to the right off old Makena Highway. The lovely white sand beach is long and wide and is the last major undeveloped beach on the leeward side of the island.
At one time, alternative people made Makena a haven. "Little Beach, Big Beach" get the highest compliments when locals and those staying at hotels and condos around Maui, come here to enjoy themselves. And if you’re looking for a quaint and spectacular site to be married or renew your vows, this is the place. (101 Things to Do on Maui)

Visit Hookipa State Park
Just past Paia on the North Shore of Maui is a very special beach called Ho’okipa. It is not only the windsurfing mecca of the world, but also a surfing, boogie boarding, swimming, kite surfing, sun bathing and all around fun place to hang out with friends and family. There is a 1/8 mile coral reef that creates a pond like area perfect for the kids to play in or to just take a dip.
Northern swells produce large waves that make Ho’okipa a very popular place for water sports or just watching. Above the beach area is an ancient Hawaiian historical ruin.
Stop in Paia before you get to Ho’okipa to grab a picnic lunch at one of the many food and beverage places. There are public bathrooms and showers available and plenty of parking.
